INTRODUCTION TO OBIEE

  • A high-level overview of the basic elements and navigation in OBIEE, the SWIFT Data Warehouse query and reporting tool. OBIEE (Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition) provides State of Minnesota agencies the ability to retrieve and present financial and human resources data from the SWIFT Data Warehouse in a variety of formats including queries, reports and dashboards. OBIEE delivers a user-friendly business intelligence platform that makes it simple to access data, whether the user is running pre-built queries and reports or creating them from the ground up. An acronym for Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition The query and reporting tool that is used to gather, analyze, and present data in the SWIFT Data Warehouse. OBIEE gives users the ability to query and present data in various formats including tables, graphs, dashboards, etc.
  • OBIEE is Analytical (Reporting/Publishing ) Software Engine which facilitates data analysis, mining and publishing capabilities on top of physical data ware house. The base product of OBIEE is Siebel Analytics which was a product of Siebel Corporation and later this was taken over by Oracle Corporation and re-named as OBIEE. OBIEE Analytic engine provides core Business Intelligence and Analytical capabilities on any DW application. This product allows to create a framework / model manually on any type of dataware house. We can logically convert relational schema to dimensional schema.
  • Supports Reporting, Dashboard and publishing functionality BI Application :
  • Apps for common industry analytical processing snow as service Analytics, Sales Analytics, Pharma Analytics, Finance HR etc. Prebuilt Dashboard and Reports on business specific application.
  • The Oracle BI Foundation Suite provides powerful capabilities that offer significant value for BI applications across the enterprise. The Oracle BI Foundation Suite consists of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition , Oracle BI Publisher, Oracle Essbase, Oracle Scorecard and Strategy Management, and Oracle Essbase Analytics Link (EAL). Following is an overview of the key components and features of the Foundation Suite.
  • Server Components
  • a) Common Enterprise Information Model: The semantic model of OBIEE. It is accessed via an open API, making it available to any Oracle or non-Oracle delivery channel, thus providing a common version of the truth for all Business Intelligence users and applications.
  • b) Oracle BI Server: A highly scalable, highly efficient query and analysis server that integrates data via sophisticated query federation capabilities from multiple relational, unstructured, OLAP, and pre-packaged application sources, whether Oracle or non-Oracle.
  • c) Oracle Essbase: The industry-leading multi-dimensional online analytical processing (OLAP) server, providing a rich environment for effectively developing custom analytic and enterprise performance management applications.
  • d) Oracle Essbase Analytics Link: Enables the delivery of effective management and financial analytic reporting to a broad user community by facilitating the real-time or on-demand transfer of financial information from Oracle Hyperion Financial Management to Oracle Essbase.
  • Components of OBIEE :
  • OBIEE can be divided into 3 parts
  • i. Repository or Administration Tools
  • ii. Reports/ Dashboards
  • iii. Ibots/Agents(11g)/Delivers
  • OBIEE has two types of components
  • 1. Server Component
  • 2. Client Component
  • Server Components :
  • a. Oracle BI Server (can be considered as heart for OBIEE)
  • b. Oracle Presentation Server
  • c. Application Server
  • d. Scheduler
  • e. Cluster Controller
  • Oracle BI Server: It is a core engine acts as a heart of entire OBIEE software which performs following operations. It controls/coordinates all reporting/repository building operations by communicating/coordinating with other server components. It takes the logical SQL requests from Presentation server and generates the optimized queries against the report request. These queries are send to physical database for execution. It manages cache to redirect queries to cache /purge cache ..etc. It is also responsible for security implementation, online repository building, Multi user development..etc. following are the other components which BI server controls/coordinates.
  • Repository: Repository is a meta data of physical data warehouse structures which were converted to Logical dimensional structures. Presentation Layer of the repository contains the objects which needed to exposed to users for report generation. This repository stores in a file with extension .rpd.
  • NQSConfig: This file is key configuration file from where OBIEE server reads the initial parameters information before it starts. It is by default located at x:\OracleBI\server\Config(for 10g) and x\Oracle\Middleware\instances\instance1\bifoundation\OracleBIServerComponent\coreapplication_obis1\repository(for 11g). In 11g you can change the repository using EM
  • Log files: All the log files are placed by default at x:\OracleBI\server\Log(For 10g) and in 11g you can directly find them.
  • NQCluster: Logs OBIEE clustering information if it is configured as cluster.
  • NQQuery: Records all the step by step process of each and every report/query activity in OBIEE. We can see all physical and logical queries in this log.
  • Logical query can be understood only by OBIEE server. These queries are generated based on the reports/answers criteria which executed from OBIEE presentation services.
  • Physical Query: OBIEE server will convert logical queries to database specific physical queries which can be executed on DW database. Logical queries are converted to physical queries based on logical/physical model metadata definitions in repository file.
  • A repository is a collection of data definitions. Or data about data (Metadata).
  • Cache: Caching is a process of storing the Info on separate layer after fetching data from physical warehouse. This helps to reuse the Information which is frequently going queried by users without hitting the database for every request.
  • Presentation Server:
  • Presentation service is a Single application that provides Oracle BI Answers, Dashboards, delivers etc via web browsers.
  • a) Take the request form the client tools and pars the request to OBIEE server.
  • b) Since presentation services are service components, in order to work on presentation Services it requires a application server.
  • Application Server:
  • Application Server is the server which provides the 3-tier Architecture features and helps to work on web based client components and by default oracle provides oc4j(10g) application server along with OBIEE s/w. These can be changed in case organization wants to go with diff app. Servers like IIs or web sphere. OBIEE provides a default application server by name OC4J. In the real production servers we can replace this by any other OBIEE uses weblogic server
  • Oracle BI Presentation Services: Oracle BI Presentation Services consists of the following interfaces.
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Answers. Oracle BI Answers provides answers to business questions. This interface allows users with the appropriate permissions to build and modify reports that let end users explore and interact with information, and present and visualize information using charts, pivot tables, and reports. These reports can be formatted, saved, organized, and shared with others. A report can be configured to refresh results in real-time. Reports created with Oracle BI Answers can be saved in the Oracle BI Presentation Catalog and integrated into any Oracle BI home page or dashboard. Results can be enhanced through options such as charting, result layout, calculation, and drilldown features.
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Interactive Dashboards. When an end user accesses Oracle BI, the user is presented with a default interactive dashboard with points of access for detailed analytics information. Dashboards are typically used to display reports that contain content specific to the needs of individual users or groups.
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Delivers. Oracle BI Delivers is the interface used to create Oracle Business Intelligence Alerts based on analytics results. Specific results can be detected within reports and the appropriate people notified immediately through Web, wireless, and mobile communications channels. They can be driven by schedules or events that can access, filter, and perform analytics on data based on specified criteria.
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Applications:
  • An Oracle BI application consists of pre-built, industry-specific Oracle BI interactive dashboards and Oracle BI reports that are built using industry best practices and address key functional areas within an organization. Oracle BI applications are integrated with operational applications to provide business metrics in reports, in context with an organizations business function and industry.
  • Oracle BI applications include Extract Transform Load (ETL) routines to extract, transform, and load data into the Oracle Business Analytics Warehouse.
  • Security in Oracle BI:
  • OBIEE allows a high degree of control over access to elements in Oracle BI applications. The security mechanism comprises Business logic object security, Presentation Catalog object security and Data level security.
  • Drilling Down in Oracle BI:
  • In OBIEE, you can drill down from a dashboard or report to an actual item in the database. For example, if you work in sales, you can drill down to the city level within a sales report, and observe that there is a large sale pending in Paris. If you are using an Oracle Siebel operational application, you can then drill down on the pending sale and go directly to that opportunity in the Oracle BI application.
  • OBI Scheduler:
  • Is a server component helps to schedule a job. To install and configure BI Scheduler requires a relational repository. We need to create a empty user and configure to BI scheduler. While creating repository OBIEE will create required tables in this user. It stores all schedule related information. For running iBots this components is mandatory. The jobs which are schedule by BI Scheduler can be monitored by job manager.
  • iBots are known as Agents
  • Client Components :
  • OBIEE has two types of client components
  • Browser (Web )based client
  • Non web based client
  • Non web based client components :
  • OBIEE Administration tool is used to build a repositories (metadata model) on top of physical data ware house It contains three layers.
  • Physical layer
  • Business layer
  • Presentation
  • This helps to easily navigate unix folder structures via graphical interface.
  • ODBC Client: allows to connect to a database and execute SQL commands. Mostly BIEE testers will use this tool to test the repository/reports.
  • Browser based Clients : These tools will wok only on any internet browser. Following the tool.
  • 1. Interactive Dashboards : Dashboard is a logical container of components developed by OBIEE like answers, other web pages, other dashboards. This provides additional features like prompts, guided navigation etc.
  • 2. Answers : Oracle BI Answers also called as reports provides a highly Interactive user interfaces to generate reports/analytics with complex calculations and multiple views and filters etc.s
  • 3. Oracle Delivers : Create proactive alerts with the help of a engine called iBots. It also helps to deliver the contents in various formats to different. Destinations.
  • 4. Disconnected Analytics : Simulated online working environment even though not connected to data ware housing.
  • 5. MS_Office Plugin : Integrates the OBIEE generated data with all MS_Office product which can further analyzed on local desktop Office products.
  • 6. BI presentation Service Administration : Client component helps to admin the activities which are being in progress within presentation services.
  • 7. BI Publisher : OBI publisher which was knows as XML publisher allows to create reports based on the layouts created in MS word or Excel. The report output can be published/bursted to various media and various people.
  • OBIEE – Architecture
  • OBI Server is principally a query and analysis server software:
  • a) that can integrate data via sophisticated capabilities from multiple sources. It acts then as a layer of abstraction and unification over the underlying databases.
  • b) that can integrate data via sophisticated capabilities from multiple sources. It acts then as a layer of abstraction and unification over the underlying databases and serve them transparently to the Oracle BI Server clients through a conceptual/logical schema (the presentation layer) which act as a database (select clause only).
  • The Weblogic biserver is a Weblogic managed server and not an OBIEE BI Server.
  • The BI Server doesn’t itself hold data; instead, it translates the incoming logical query into one or more outgoing “physical queries” against the relevant data sources.
  • The Oracle BI Server exposes its data dictionary (the presentation layer) through a standard ODBC 2.0 and a JDBC compliant interface. Clients of the Oracle BI Server see then a logical schema view (the presentation layer) independent of the source physical database schemas.
  • Oracle BI Server clients (such as Presentation Service) submit simplified logical SQL, which ultimately gets translated by the server to some combination of physical SQL sent to the back-end databases (or files), in addition to intermediate processing within the Oracle BI Server Execution Engine.
  • At a simplified level, the internal layers provide a centralized and consistent conceptual data model and have two primary functions:
  • 1. Compile incoming query requests into executable code
  • 2. and execute the code.
  • Repository design is the creation and configuration task of this three layer and is the most important development part of BI Server.
  • The Oracle BI Server infrastructure includes facilities such as:
  • Session and query management, cancellation,
  • Statistics logging (log),
  • Monitoring (usage tracking,),
  • Security, using standard protocols e.g. LDAP, Active Directory or OID.
  • The Architecture of OBIEE enhances the existing customer investments in Security, Data Access, ETL, Portals, Analytics Tool and Reporting, ERP Applications and Desktop Tools.
  • Using business intelligence software you can understand the complete picture in real-time. You can extract useful information about customer interactions from data stored in your CRM and ERP systems. You can understand shortcomings in your product or service, delivery and billing processes. OBIEE is one such premier business intelligence software that contains various components to help you do it well.
  • The BI Server – Allows users to access the built-in functionality of all the components of OBIEE (Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition). It is a common enterprise business model and abstraction layer.
